the flute plays
no more
No need for who, what where or why.

All of my best haiku are found poems.

(generally found by Dick Whyte to my great surprise and utter amusement)

Here is what Dick and I exchanged about the poem with one minor edit (if you don't care about poetic aesthetics, now is the time to skip)

Scott initially sent this to me on my front page and we talked back and forward about it. I thought I'd transfer my comments over here as they relate explicitly to this poem.

Message 1:
Wow - that is brilliant!!! I love it. You are certainly grasping the essence of haiku here.

It is a wonderful image my friend. Just wonderful. The line break "the flute plays / no more" is inspired. This is where the dialectics of this piece open up for me - a contrast between the "the flute plays" and "no more." You haven't simply said the flute no longer plays, but created a line where it does play, and then a later moment in which it plays "no more." Really nice.

Message 2:
I think this outstrips all the short poems you've done so far. It has a great mystery to it, but it isn't confusing or a riddle. It is really beautiful. It is a little like this one of mine which I wrote a while ago;

full moon-
the closest we've been
all year

Kinda mysterious, as you don't know quite what emotional circumstance the poet is referring to, but it doesn't lack in terms of sense and imagery. Hope that doesn't sound too ego-fueled, but I know my own work better than anyone elses, and a few people commented on it having that air of mystery without being confusing or convoluted.

Anyway - awesome poem!!!! LOVE IT. Scott - you will [get pretty darned good at] the haiku yet my friend. Count on it.

I like this, and I'm not usually one for haikus. It seems like it could lead into a greater story.
